The Weekend of the Nursery

On New Year's Day, we began the initial steps of creating the Rookie's habitat, or, as some call it, a nursery. The goal: Finish the room with breathtaking results and, more importantly, our sanity intact. So, we brought up the selected paint (a light blue, a rust color, and something called "Aviary Nest"), moved the furniture to the basement (where the new "guest room" will be located), and taped-off the doors, window, trim and ceiling. What fun... The process was underway.

Day One. We go through the task of drawing perfect lines on the wall with a level and a yard stick to divide the walls into the blue/rust/Aviary Nest areas that we have decided on. This would be simple to do with: a. More adequate equipment other than a level and a yard stick; and b. walls and floors that were level to begin with. No matter-- we got the lines to where we want them.

At this point, I ushered Justine out of the process for the most part (this is something I wanted to do myself-- besides, she ultimately has the lion's share of the work, what with carrying the child, giving him nourishment, dealing with the stress on her body and mind that go along with carrying a baby, and, you know, the whole giving birth thing). The music went on-- mainly the odd assortment of crap that I like (Steve Winwood(!), Prince, The Gaslight Anthem, Bon Iver) and stuff that Justine and both like (the new Pink album-- quite good actually). The plastic drop cloth went down, which was not easy, considering every time the heat would kick-on, the floor vent would create a cloudlike surface of thin plastic. Fun to look at, not fun to paint on. The first coats of the blue and Aviary Nest went up. Not bad. They got another coat shortly thereafter. So far, so good.

And, we got a new picture of Justine in front of the Christmas tree.

Day Two. Stripe Day. The nice man at the paint counter at Home Depot said the rust was going to go on thin. Nobody will ever accuse him of being a liar. 4 coats. Four. Ah, but first, I had to find the thin pencil lines Justine and I made to denote the area where the rust stripe was going. Under 2 coats of paint. Not happening. New lines needed to be drawn, which, all things considered was pretty easy. So was the taping for the rust stripe, where I expertly recycled some tape from the ceiling. And, while the paint was thin, four coats did the trick. Once again, things went surprisingly un-Drew-like.

Day Three. Move that bus! But not until after the tape was removed, and, oh yeah-- the first two pieces of furniture were built.

First, the tape needed to come off. Sure enough, my sister-in-law's expert painter boyfriend came through with the tip that allowed the rust stripe to come out pretty darn perfect. We owe him a beer.

On to the crib. For being a convertible day-bed/crib, it was easier than I thought it was going to be. All the parts were included, the directions were thorough (and in English), and I didn't need any foreign tools to complete the task.

Finally, on to the dresser. Substantially more complicated. About 30 parts. About 160 various screws. Ugh. After a few hours of blood (not really), sweat (plenty of it), and tears (mostly sweat actually), the dresser was complete. Justine loved the room basically put together. Layla was confused. And I, in very un-Drew-like fashion, managed to do my part without screwing anything up. Mission (for the most part) Accomplished.

And the best is yet to come.

The Great 2 lb. Ninja

And here we are at week 27. The days are getting shorter, the temperature is heading south, and, as Justine's belly continues to grow, so does our anticipation.

Oh, and our son is a ninja.

It's TRUE! And it's more than just him kicking Justine (quite a bit). I thought it was just me at first-- I would put my head next to her stomach, and he would kick me. I thought it was a coincidence, but it keeps happening. He even made sure to give us a demonstration this morning. I couldn't be prouder.

So, here's our little ninja, and his beautiful mommy.

Belly

Ok- here they are. Since it is the first time in my life that I can attribute my growing belly to something other than Miller Lite- I will share some pics. On the left is 20 weeks and the right is 22 weeks. Everything is going well- we are having fun enjoying the kicking show every night after dinner.

Our Energetic Little One

It's a boy!!!!! Without a doubt our little one was happy to show his goods! Within a minute of the tech beginning the exam it was quite clear we would be joining team blue. Of course we are so excited! Drew is still very worried about how our little boy will choose a football team to cheer for...but we'll deal with that when we get there:) We have now been told by two ultrasound techs and a pre-natal doctor that we have quite the energetic little child- so we are now actively trying to get as much sleep as possible before March gets here! For those of you who knew Justine as a child, you will not be surprised to see that our boy already has his thumb in his mouth!! At 20 weeks, we are at the half way point. All tests have been going great and the gestational diabetes is being managed by diet and exercise, so we couldn't be more excited.

Oh, and one more thing...

2 Days Until We Know...

If it's gonna be a doll or a truck, a pony or a baseball glove, Strawberry Shortcake or G.I. Joe... Friday is the big day. Hopefully.

Sometimes with these things, the kid's legs could be crossed, or it could be flipped on the wrong side. But we're keeping our fingers crossed.

We have polled family and friends, and so far, the spread seems to be 60% GIRL, %40 BOY. Justine and I think it's a boy. Who knows. And, really, we don't care. Just so long as it's healthy.

In the meantime, we went to the Volkswagon site, where you find out in an entirely non-scientific manner, what the kid will look like. So, while we wait, we present you with our rookie.

I REALLY hope the kid's cuter than this.

Stay tuned, gang.

The Case For a Coooool Baby.

As a future responsible parent, I know that we can't go spending crazy cash on awesome baby clothes. Really, I get it. Truth be told, when the baby is just chillin' with his/her parents, he/she will be mostly in discount onesies, or swaddling clothes, or whatever babies wear (cut me some slack here-- I can barely dress myself).

That being said, I can't help but look for clothes that I would wear if I had the kind of awareness I have now (or lack-there-of). See Obama-Rama at the top. Awesome.

Exhibit A for instance. It's a toddler Bruce Springsteen shirt. That's right. Now, by the time the kid is ready to go to concerts, I would assume the great E Street Band will be long off the road, but I said the same about the Stones. Let's move on.

Now, The Clash may be a bit too "I'm So Punk," and the Willie shirt may be too "I'm a Country Boy/Girl," but I'm showing extremes here. The point is... well, there is no point. There are hundreds of these kinds of shirts flooding the marketplace. Sure, they're all around $18, but, still.

Another consideration is sports teams. We have no idea what teams the child will root for. I am an ardent Phillies/Sixers/Eagles/Flyers fan, while Justine champions the Yankees/Giants demographic. Now, we can hope that the youngin' will root for one, or all of our respective sports franchises, but there is a chance the kid could grow up to be something strange like a Rams/Red Sox/Maple Leafs/Suns fan. So, how cool would it be to sway the odds in our favor at a very, very early age. See below.

I know, "Awwwww," right? C'mon, what baby would NOT want to fall asleep staring up at a mobile of Eagles mysteriously circling their head... Umm, nevermind.

Now, do we (I) actually WANT these items? No. But I had to go out onto the internet for myself to see that there is a universe of baby apparel that isn't geared to the "cute pink bunnies" and "adorable blue teddy bear" crowd. The process of "window-shopping" is satisfaction enough for me.

For Now.

All the best-- Papa Frantzen.

Here we go

Time seems to be flying by as we run from appointment to appointment and work on reading all of our mommy & daddy-to be books. We thought we would set up an easy way to show everyone how things are changing for us here. Our goal is to share with everyone the fun we are having getting ready to welcome our little one in March.

Thanks so much to everyone for your well-wishes. As always we feel so loved and supported. Please stop back regularly as we plan to update as often as we can.

Below are two of our ultrasound pics from week 11 and week 14.
